“Many waters cannot quench love,
Nor can the floods drown it.
If a man would give for love
All the wealth of his house,
It would be utterly despised.”
LOVE, what a wonderful word! It’s Valentine’s season so no doubt there’ll be much talk about love and romance. Furthermore, there has been lots of talk lately about compassion, tolerance, understanding, and the like — amid the heated protests, violence, and seeming unrest in the USA. That’s in part because everyone has their unique thoughts on love.
There’s a tried and true saying that, “History Repeats Itself.” So why not take a moment to review the history of Valentine’s Day here. It might give you food for thought — which I hope you’ll share at the end of this post. While you’re at it, allow me to share some of my thoughts on love (as it pertains to social relationships).
My Throughts on Love
* Pure and holy affection is not a feeling, but a principle. Those who are actuated by true love, are neither unreasonable nor blind. – {FLB 255.2}
* Human love can never bear its precious fruit until it is united with the divine nature and trained to grow heavenward. – {FLB 255.3}
* True love is not a strong, fiery, impetuous passion. On the contrary, it is calm and deep in its nature. It looks beyond mere externals, and is attracted by qualities alone. It is wise and discriminating (discerning, prudent), and its devotion is real and abiding. – {FLB 255.4}
* “Love cures people – both the ones who give it and the ones who receive it.” — Karl Menninger
* Let the question be asked, and sincerely answered, Do I love my neighbor as myself? Do I observe the golden rule, to do unto others as I would that they do unto me?
* Learn to forgive and love well.
* Those who are reflecting the light of God will cherish a loving disposition.
* It is not the great services and lofty aspirations which receive the approval of God, but the love and consecration through which the service is performed, be it great or little.
* Rebuke in love but bear a straight testimony in times of erring and apostasy.
* Life is precious. Savor EVERY moment of it.
* Love to your maximum capability.
* Make sure your love is blazing hot this time of year. Fan it if you must.
* Love is in the air. Are you breathing in its freshness?
* LOVE, what a wonderful God!
* LOVE, what a wonderful Person!
* If your love is cold, the only way to get out of that iciness is to add some sizzling heat.
* If your love is cold, then you cause your loved one to freeze up. But when your love is hot, you cause your loved one to melt all over.
* You don’t have to try to DO stuff for God to love you. He loves you if you do and if you don’t. Stop torturing yourself to earn His favor.
* God’s love for us is not based on our love for Him. God loves us in spite of ourselves.
* A woman who will compromise her freedom of choice for acceptance and cravings for love, has not really reached true womanhood.
* When you love others perfectly, you give them the right and FREEDOM to NOT love you in return, even hate you if they must. Love is not conditioned upon reciprocation.
* Perfect love casts out fear. There is no fear in genuine LOVE.
* Love craves expressions, creativity, and freedom.
* “True love gives you X-ray vision. You see past one’s flaws to see their heart.” — @BrittanyDMorton
* I often hear preachers say that there’s nowhere in the Bible God where God commands the wife to love her husband. * They clearly haven’t read the Bible closely. What about “loveone another?” “Love your neighbor as yourself?” “Love your enemies?” :)
* Who can find a virtuous woman? for her worth is far above rubies. (Proverbs 31:10, 11)
* “A prudent wife is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 19:14)
* Married life is not all romance; it has its real difficulties and its homely details. The wife must not consider herself a doll, to be tended, but a woman; one to put her shoulder under real, not imaginary, burdens, and live an understanding, thoughtful life, considering that there are other things to be thought of than herself. – {FLB 256.4}
* Let a young man seek one to stand by his side who is fitted to bear her share of life’s burdens, one whose influence will ennoble and refine him, and who will make him happy in her love. – {FLB 256.3}
* Before giving her hand in marriage, every woman should inquire whether he with whom she is about to unite her destiny is worthy. What has been his past record? Is his life pure? Is the love which he expresses of a noble, elevated character, or is it a mere emotional fondness? Has he traits of character that will make her happy? Can she find true peace and joy in his affection? Will she be allowed to preserve her individuality, or must her judgment and conscience be surrendered to the control of her husband? … These questions have a vital bearing upon the well-being of every woman who enters the marriage relation. – {FLB 257.2}
* “He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.” (Song of Solomon 2:4)
“We must not consider as our enemies all those who do not receive us with a smile upon their lips and with demonstrations of love. It is much easier to play the martyr than to overcome a bad temper. We must give others an example of not stopping at every trifiling offense to vindicate our rights…Let us leave to God the care of our reputation.” — Mind, Character, Personality, p. 24
